A Job Is a Lot Like an Iceberg. On the Surface, So Much Is Hidden.

Let’s talk for a second about something near and dear to your heart…

Your Employer Brand. And that truly incredible UX-optimized Careers Portal. Perfectly articulating your company’s culture of innovation and inclusiveness. Yet, there are just a few problems. First, by posting the Infamous Boring Job Postings you’re currently posting now, which bear no resemblance in message or tone to your EB, you run the risk of watering down what the company stands for. Thing is, it’s critical to express to prospective candidates how your Employer Brand manifests itself in the role. The day-to-day, the give and take of the job. Even more critical is to also include focus on the other two critical elements any role that are key to attracting the best candidates— 1) the Personal Attribute that gives candidate confidence they’ll have the freedom to be them while doing what they love, an attribute that speaks to their “Quintessential Who,” or “Q” Who, something they value deeply about themselves, something valued more highly in the particular role at your company than it might be in the same role elsewhere and 2) the Team Work Dynamic that best supports them in the role.

Maximizing Your Employer Brand.

The reason for this is as important as it is surprising. In the groundbreaking book.“Nine Lies About Work,” research, done by the Gallup Organization, revealed eight aspects of work that are most important to employees, and as such are predictors of team/individual success. And surprisingly, company culture/brand didn’t even make the list.
Rather, the eight were divided evenly between the other two key elements of the job —
• things relating to personal success and the exercising of the candidate’s key strength, and
• things relating to team success within the existing team work dynamic.
As such, they are also divided evenly between the things candidates want to believe about their team work experience, “We Desires,” and the things they want to believe about their personal work, “Me Desires.”

From the Harvard Business Review’s Nine Lies About Work by Marcus Buckingham, it turns out that the Aspects of Work Most Important to Employees happen to align perfectly with PowerPost Messaging.

And so, you say, “This is great. I get it.” But if you’re telling me employer branding alone can’t brand all aspects of a job, and, of course, if the Infamous Boring Job Postings I’m posting can’t, tell me what can?
